Third Party Insurance
Third Party Only
Third party insurance provides minimum coverage required by the Hong Kong legislation. If you are involved in a collision with another vehicle, your insurer will cover the liability against a claim by a third party on your behalf.
Third Party Only insurance on a motor vehicle in Hong Kong will provide cover to the policyholder for their liability to third parties for property damage, injury, or death. Under Hong Kong law it is mandatory for every vehicle to be insured against their liability for bodily injury or death to third parties. The minimum coverage required by law on a Third Party Policy is HK$100,000,000 for any one event resulting in death or bodily injury. These policies will also usually provide HK$2,000,000 towards covering property damage, even though there is no such requirement under Hong Kong Law.
Third Party Fire and Theft
Third Party Fire and Theft policies provide the same coverage as Third Party Only policies but include one important addition: vehicles are covered as property. As such, property insurance can be applied to damages or loss resulting from fire or theft. The extra benefits on a policy of this kind may not always be a standard inclusion on all policies.
Given that Third Party car insurance only provides the most fundamental cover required in Hong Kong, there will only be limited coverage. Therefore, under a third party plan the following items are usually not covered:
- Damage to your car and property
- Personal injury and death
- Roadside help if your car breaks down
- Broken windscreens due to debris/negligence
