Countless policyholders choose to switch plans from standard health insurance to the Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme (VHIS). It’s usually because of two things. First, VHIS’ policy terms and conditions are more clearly laid-out. Second, it also offers tax-deductible premiums. Of course, just because VHIS is tax-deductible doesn’t mean that it’s better than regular health insurance plans. Our article VHIS vs. Standard Health Insurance goes over the pros and cons of the two options.

In this Kwiksure article, we’ll talk about every office worker’s biggest concern: how tax deduction works in VHIS.

Table of contents
  • How does the VHIS calculate your tax deduction amount?
  • How do you apply for the VHIS tax deductions online?
  • Can I also save taxes by buying VHIS for my family?

How does the VHIS calculate your tax deduction amount?

One of the biggest selling points of the VHIS is the tax deduction. The maximum deduction limit for each insured person is $8,000. However, note that you cannot deduct $8,000 directly from your taxes.

To calculate your tax deductions, follow this formula:

VHIS premium x Tax rate = Tax deductions

Let’s say your VHIS premium is $6,000, but your tax rate is 2%. In that case, lucky you, you can now deduct $120 from your taxes.

Since this article is written with the average office worker in mind, we must include salaries tax and allowances.

Personal tax assessment = (Total income - Tax deductions - VHIS tax-free allowance) x Tax rate

For instance, your annual income is $180,000, and your personal allowance is $132,000. After calculating with the formula above,

Your tax payable under personal assessment should be:

($180,000 - $132,000 - $120) x 2% = $957.6

How do you apply for the VHIS tax deductions online?

After confirming your personal information on the eTax platform, click on the tab: “Select Each Section on the Tax Return Form”. Then, check “Eligible premiums paid under the VHIS policy” (Pictured below).

VHIS tax deduction strategy in 2025

As soon as you’re done filling in your income and other information, you’ll be brought to the "Eligible Premiums Paid under the VHIS" page. If you are purchasing an insurance plan for yourself, you only need to fill in the "Eligible premium paid for yourself" in item (1) (See the red circle in the picture below).

Paying the premiums for your relatives? You need to fill in the required information and premiums in item (2) "Eligible premiums paid for specified relatives" (See the blue circle below).

Can I also save taxes by buying VHIS for my family?

Whether a taxpayer like yourself is buying VHIS for you or your eligible relatives, you can deduct the premiums paid in the past year from the "taxable income". Again, the maximum annual deduction for each insured person under the VHIS is $8,000. On the other hand, there is no upper limit on the number of insured persons under the same plan.

You might be wondering, “what counts as an ‘eligible’ relative?”. The Tax Bureau clearly stipulates that only qualified "dependants" can deduct from taxes on their premiums. These dependants can include:

  • Spouse and children of the taxpayer
  • Taxpayer's parents, paternal grandparents, maternal grandparents and brothers and sisters
  • Parents, paternal grandparents, maternal grandparents and siblings of the taxpayer’s spouse

Suppose you have purchased VHIS for yourself, your father and your daughter at the same time, and your tax rate this year is 15%.

Finally, if you have brothers and sisters, you should discuss with them in advance. Decide on who is responsible for buying the VHIS for your parents and who can declare the relevant tax "deductions”. This is so that your family could avoid repeatedly applying for tax exemptions.

Everything you should know about boat insurance in Hong Kong

Last month, a yacht moored at Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter caught fire and subsequently spread to the two adjacent boats. The smoke billowing out of the fire was so dense, that it could be seen from across the harbour. Witnesses said they heard multiple explosions. Two boats subsequently sunk into the sea, with the remaining one sunk halfway. In Hong Kong, not many people can afford luxury yachts, so boat insurance is not always talked about. However, every luxury boat costs at least millions of dollars so it pays for boat owners to secure boat insurance to safeguard themselves against potential accidents. In today’s Kwiksure article, we will take a look at the main types and benefits of boat insurance.

Leading taxi insurance provider scrapped all policies - Analysis and insurance options (Updated 7/1)

Leading taxi insurance provider scrapped all policies - Analysis and insurance options (Updated 7/1) The leading taxi insurance provider in Hong Kong announced without preceding warning that it would scrap all policies after seven days. In other words, approximately 75% of the current taxi insurance policies will be terminated. If drivers affected by this change fail to find a suitable insurance company to take over their policies within this time, they may be prohibited from driving. Many drivers are puzzled and worried about losing their livelihood with their insurance being suddenly scrapped. Relevant sources estimated that more than 550,000 passengers and 25,000 taxi drivers may be affected every day. These drivers will lose a total of $44 million in business each day. In today's Kwiksure feature, our experts will analyze the ins and outs of this incident, study the dilemma faced by the taxi insurance business and feasible solutions. ---------------------------------------------------- (Updated 7/1) This morning, the Insurance Authority (IA) announced that it will take over the business and assets of Target Insurance, and will hold a press conference in the afternoon to elaborate. - Through regulatory work and market intelligence, the IA found that Target Insurance’s investment activities and fund allocation may have violated the requirements of the Insurance Ordinance. With the company's internal governance also lacking, the Authority exercised its rights on the grounds of public interest to appoint Deloitte’s Touche Tohmatsu as the manager to maintain the normal operations of Target Insurance. - Deloitte will review and assess the current asset status of Target Insurance to obtain a full picture of the company's future direction. - The solvency of Target Insurance has been poor. The IA has previously imposed additional regulatory requirements on the company, including additional statutory deposits and restrictions on the use and deployment of its assets. - The situation is a special case as four insurers need to process 8,000 policies in a short period of time. If the insurers fail to complete the policy issuance process before the policy cancellation deadline, they can make a 30-day mortgage arrangement, or postpone the submission of some documents, so that they can provide insurance coverage without fully issuing new policies. This is to avoid hindrance to the taxi industry. - Since Tuesday, the IA has taken the lead in coordinating, so that taxi owners do not need to inquire about the premium by themselves, so as to facilitate the transfer to insurers that still have capacity. - As of this morning, policies for approximately 7,894 taxis have been diverted to the four insurance companies. ----------------------------------------------------
